Resumen:
Tomado del resumen: Throughout history, war has been a constant plague and threat against humanity. Just in the twentieth century alone, the world was devastated by two of the deadliest wars in written history, these being World War I and World War II. The aftermath of World War II went on to change international relations and the restructuring of world politics. As a collective attempt to save future generations against the evils witnessed during World War II, the United Nations was founded on October 24, 1945. Since then, the United Nations has created peacekeeping missions throughout the world in order to meet the many challenges associated with maintaining international peace and security. As a United Nations member state, Guatemala became a troop-contributing country to peacekeeping missions in 1994-1995, then again in 2003 to the present day. Guatemala has contributed to United Nations peacekeeping forces in Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Abyei, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Lebanon, Sudan, South Sudan, Nepal and the Ivory Coast. This thesis outlines the work accomplished by the Guatemalan Army as a troop-contributing country for United Nations Peacekeeping Operations; gives background information on UN Peacekeeping Operations; explains the history of Guatemalan participation with the United Nations; gives the history of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as the changing missions and mandates in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Lastly, one chapter is dedicated to personal recollections from the author, who was a peacekeeper in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
